Fred Phelps and The Westboro Baptist Church

A  VOICE FOR GOD OR A HATE MONGER?

Many of us know about the Westboro Church and their infamous leader Pastor Fred Phelps, who seems to  hate everybody. One of the things that he and his “church” do is to go to the funerals of dead soldiers to protest them, with signs saying “God hates soldiers” and “Soldiers are going to hell”.

The Reverend(?) Fred Phelps, founder of Westboro Baptist Church in Topeka, Kansas, is one of the most despised public figures in the United States. His reputation for aggressive speech and abusive behaviour was seen after he established a web presence with godhatesamerica.com and godhatesfags.com.

QUOTING FROM THEIR WEB SITE:
"Since 1955, Westboro Baptist Church (WBC) has taken forth the precious from the vile, and so is as the mouth of God (Jer. 15:19). In 1991, WBC took her ministry to the streets, conducting 42,733 peaceful demonstrations (to date) opposing the fag lifestyle of soul-damning, nation-destroying filth. In response, america bombed WBC; & burned WBC on 8-2-2008. God is america's enemy: 5,347 dead soldiers; $11 trillion+ in national debt.

America crossed the line on June 26, 2003, when the Supreme Court (the conscience of the nation) ruled in Lawrence v. Texas that we must respect sodomy. (Bible truth about fags). WBC believes her gospel message to be this world's last hope."

Although the 75-member church led by the Fred Phelps uses the name “Baptist,” it is an independent congregation not affiliated with any known Baptist Convention or Association. This church is probably the most hated group of individuals in America.  It is a  mistake to take Phelps seriously at any theological level!

One of Westboro Baptist Church’s most actve opponent has been the Southern Baptist Convention, since Mr. Phelps had been ordained as a Southern Baptist Convention minister in 1947, when he was 17 years old. It is not clear when he left the convention, but Westboro Church was founded in 1955 as an independent church.

On a new website, GodHatesIreland.com, Fred Phelps has turned his obnoxious remarks on Ireland. In my opinion, all of these web sites are offensive to any religious or thinking individual. If you decide to access any of these 3 web sites, be prepared to see blasphemy, bigotory, lies, and hate-filled language delivered in the pretext of being "sermons". He singles out specific Individuals as well for his vicious attacks. Phelps's allegedly Christian web sites  constitutes the most appalling example of anti-war, anti-homosexual, anti-Catholic, and anti-semetic speech I have heard since the speeches of Adolph Hitler.

Fred Phelps' protests are so bizarre and deranged, that he may actually be helping the the very causes he opposes.

The image that Phelps constructs of God is not very different than the one that the Terrorists have constructed.

A federal jury in Baltimore delivered a $10.9 million verdict against Phelps and his Westboro congregation, due to its ugly protests at the funeral of Lance Cpl. Matthew A. Snyder, who died in Iraq. Tke verdict was overturned on appeal.

What we are talking about is the dark side of free speech. and it’s hard to know where to draw the line.  Just how far can the Westboro gangsters go?  Can Phelp's group crash a Mass or other Religious Service?  Is a funeral a religious service?  How far could protesters go at a funeral for of a President or Congressman while we were at war?  Is a soldier, sailor, or marine a “public figure”?  If you speak out against his group, do you become a "public figure"?  Is it child abuse or child endangerment to use young Children in such demonstrations?  Should Phelps have to pay for the costs of special police protection?
